“Civic Organization of the Year”
Indianhead Community Action Agency, Inc. was presented with the “Civic Organization of the Year” award by Century Link on April 24, 2010 on behalf of the Greater Ladysmith Area Chamber of Commerce.
"ICAA has very active grant writers who are instrumental in bringing new and innovative opportunities to Rusk County, " said Linda Flanders, CEO of Taproot, which has assisted ICAA with producing a series of educational movie projects aimed at informing the public about a variety of issues including underage drinking and medical knowledge to assist young people with decision making. She called ICAA an innovative agency eager to embrace the digital age.
Upon receiving the award, Brett Gerber, CEO of ICAA spoke, saying, "Being acknowledged by receiving this award is bittersweet. Without question the dedicated staff at Indianhead and their extraordinary effort over the past year and a half is deserving of recognition as are many other people and organizations, please do not pass up an opportunity to recognize their work. However, the bitter part of this acknowledgement is the reality in which we have been active for over a year. With 15% unemployment in Rusk County, families and children becoming homeless everyday and over 500 families requiring ICAA Rusk County food assistance each month, our communities are in dire need. With these challenges in front of us I encourage you all to continue supporting our workforce, employed or not, continue persevering in assisting people, our neighbors, and continue being passionate about the future of our communities."
Through a grant, Taproot and ICAA are currently collaborating on a training workshop to show how the media arts can provide, through technology, assistance in educating and clarifying community issues. "I believe that ICAA has truly become a role model for civic organizations," Flanders said.
